Map : Black Banks & Knitsley Fell, Scale 1:10000, contours 5m, A3 size.
The current map was first surveyed during Winter 1999/2000 and was last used February 2007.
The map for today's event incorporates minor amendments this year and was surveyed
and drawn by D.Caudwell using OCAD.
Maps will be overprinted and bagged but not sealed.

Terrain : Black Banks consists of fast, runnable, open forest, with patches of thicker woodland.
It has a network of paths, rides and forest roads and is generally very open, although it has been planted
on a slope which is steep in places. There are some patches of clear felled and re-planted areas,
but where possible, the courses have been planned to avoid these.
Knitsley Fell is flatter, except at its SW extremity, where it becomes steep again. The moorland has been
extensively quarried and also used for mining in the past. There are many spoil heaps, some of which
provide complex contour detail - the ground cover is mainly heather which may be quite deep in places.
There are patches of mature trees on the moor, as well as some areas of younger deciduous trees,
and a few clumps of gorse - the most significant of which are marked on the map by vertical green stripes.
The moorland is disected by a minor road which divides the area and care should be taken when crossing.
