Organiser's coments - Kath Ivens
The number of runners was lower than we had hoped for but I don't think the weather helped,
I hope all those that did take part enjoyed the courses Rob planned - those that had later starts
had less rain and may have even felt the sunshine!
Thank you very much to all the helpers for coming along and making sure everything ran smoothly
despite the wind and rain, Rob for planning and David for controlling.
Planners comments - Rob McKenna
Restrictions imposed by out of bounds areas for pheasant rearing on The Cragg Estate meant that we
could not use the whole of the area (it actually stretches down to the river Reed).
However, with the use of electronic punching and the wealth of detail contained in the 3 main spoil heap
areas, the planning of the technical courses was only hampered by the use of crossing points.
The walls mark the boundaries of the 3 tenant farmers who all had stock out in the fields.
My apologies to those competitors on the Brown and Blue courses who thought that the walled area to the east
of the parking area was continuous - there were two short sections of fence that could have been crossed
(these were marked on the map). Thanks for observing the wall crossing notice.
The start and finish was dictated by the yellow course as there are very few line features other than the
boundary walls - which way round was dictated by the longer courses.
Final permission to hold the event was only agreed about 6 weeks before the event and it
was not until then that I had a chance to visit the area. It was already known from the previous event (2002)
that the spoil heaps had a lot more detail than the map indicated and I decided to try to resolve this first.
I did manage to update the spoil heaps in the main area and those to the NW and although I did survey the
area in the Ridsdale corner I only had time to 'tweak' the map in the vicinity of the controls.
It's a pity about the weather as the weeks leading up to the event had been perfect and it did get out fine
when control collecting - thanks to the small band of club helpers who agreed to stop back and make this
task relatively easy.
My thanks also to Dave Brook for his diligent and constructive comments on my provisional plans - I hope the
outcome of these efforts proved to be of sufficient challenge for you.
The disappointing turn out is quite depressing - this is the second event held here and the first faired
not much better. Technically it is an excellent area and generally quite runable.
